The White House press corps was just called to the Oval Office for a brief and unexpected meeting with Donald Trump along with several UFC stars, part of a highly anticipated event on June 14 marking America's 250th anniversary, the BBC reported, Gazeta Express reports.
Trump insisted that reporters stay on topic, but still answered some questions on Iran - again expressing optimism that a negotiated resolution to the conflict is possible.
“They want to make a deal,” he told the room. “We’ve had very good talks over the last 24 hours and it’s very possible that we can make a deal.”
It is worth noting that Trump said – not for the first time – that Iran has agreed to never have a nuclear weapon “among other things.”
This claim has not been confirmed in any way by the Iranian side.
The US president also appeared to indicate that the 30-day deadline for a negotiated solution that has been reported in US media is flexible, telling reporters as they left that there is "never" a deadline.
We still have very little direct information from the administration on the status of the talks, although Trump and other officials have repeatedly claimed that they are going well.
And while the White House has left a "kinetic" military option on the table, at least publicly they continue to express confidence that it will not be necessary.
