A train derailed this Monday in the Goppenstein area, in the Swiss canton of Valais, after an avalanche blocked the railway line.
Swiss media report that cantonal police confirmed that a rescue operation is underway at the scene and estimate that there are several injured.
According to a post from local police on platform X, security forces responded immediately and initial reports indicate passengers were injured. A spokesperson for the BLS railway company confirmed that the derailment was caused by snow.
As reported by Pomona, the train, which was carrying 80 passengers, derailed in the Stockgrabe area, between Goppenstein and Hohten, in the canton of Valais. The Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) announced that traffic on this line will remain suspended until at least 04:00 on Tuesday morning.
BLS told the media that the derailed train was a regional express, which had departed from Spiez at around 06:00 a.m. According to the company, the process of evacuating passengers from the train would begin immediately.
Authorities continue the operation at the scene, while official announcements on the condition of the passengers and the exact causes of the incident are awaited.
