The world of motorsport has been hit hard by tragedy following the death of Borja Gómez at the age of 20.
Gómez was involved in a horrific accident during the European Stock Championship race earlier today.
The Spanish driver, originally from San Javier, was leading the world championship standings ahead of the third round at the Magny-Cours track in France.
This followed a second place in the season-opening race at Estoril and a victory at the Jerez circuit in early June.
However, during the free practice session, he was involved in a fatal collision.
It is reported that Gómez had left the track alone, but was then hit by the motorcycle of another pilot who was coming after him.
In a statement from his team, Team Honda Laglisse, the painful news was confirmed:
"With all the pain in our hearts, we regret to announce that Borja Gómez has passed away on the Magny-Cours track after a serious accident in the first free practice session of the European Stock Championship.
Beyond his extraordinary talent as a pilot, we will remember Borjan for the great man he was.
His kindness and smile will last forever. We will always hold him in our hearts.
On behalf of the entire Laglisse team, we would like to express our condolences to all of his family and friends in these difficult times.
"We love you, Borja. Rest in peace."
Borja Gómez had previously competed in Moto2, and dreamed of returning there one day.
He began his career in Supermoto racing in Spain, then moved to the Kawasaki Cup in 2019.
He later moved to Superbike, where he finished second in the 2021 Spanish Superbike Championship.
A year later, he was runner-up again with the Cardoso Team.
In 2023, he joined Moto2 with the Fantic Racing team, where he participated in 13 Grand Prix races, before moving to the FIM Stock European Championship, where he has been excelling this season.
