Kosovo is ready for another big challenge in the sport that has elevated it to world prominence: judo.
The Senior World Championships, one of the most important events of the year in this sport, starts today in Budapest and will last until June 20.
In this prestigious arena, where 557 judokas from 93 countries on six continents will compete, Kosovo is represented by three of the most prominent names on the international scene: Distria Krasniqi in the -52 kg category, Laura Fazliu in -63 kg and Akil Gjakova in BHJB-73 kg.
Olympic champion Distria Krasniqi will compete on Saturday. European champion Akil Gjakova will take to the mat on Sunday, while European runner-up Laura Fazliu will compete on Monday.
The Kosovo delegation is led by head coach Driton Kuka, a figure who has transformed the sport of judo in the country, supported by coach Fatos Tabaku and Majlinda Kelmendi – the Kosovo judo legend who is now shaping new champions from behind the scenes.
For Kosovo, this is another opportunity to prove that a small country can produce great talent and compete worthily with the best in the world.
Kosovar judokas, prepared with professionalism and passion, are ready to write a new chapter in the history of our sport.
