National activist Emrush Xhemajli, on behalf of the "Lëvizja" Society, delivered an emotional speech on March 1 in Winterthur, Switzerland, where many LPK collaborators were present, on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the birth of the national hero, Adem Demaçi.
During his speech, Xhemajli indicated that in addition to the legal work that Adem Demaçi did during the nineties in the Council for the Protection of Human Rights and Freedoms, and later in the Parliamentary Party, he secretly maintained illegal connections with the People's Movement of Kosovo and through it with the Kosovo Liberation Army until he openly became the General Political Representative of the KLA.
Adem Demaçi's contribution was extraordinary for the unification, unity and continuity of the People's Movement of Kosovo in the preparatory meetings of August of the summer of 1991 for the 3rd General Assembly of the LPK that was held later, in October, in Ujmir, Klina.
On August 10, 1992, in Lucerne, Switzerland, a meeting of the LPK Presidency was held, attended by Adem Demaçi, Ahmet Haxhiu, Fazli Veliu, Gafurr Elshani, Ali Ahmeti, Xhavit Haliti and myself, Emrush Xhemajli. Only one point was discussed at that meeting. The armed struggle of the enslaved Albanian people. I am quoting what Adem Demaçi said at the beginning of the meeting: “Very soon, the task of armed struggle will come before us and be set…., the people will ask to fight…” and he gave a series of ideas and orientations for the LPK Presidency regarding the preparation of the armed struggle for the liberation of Kosovo. So, we are talking about the year 1992, the beginning of the process of forming the KLA.
III.
The most impressive meeting and activity with Adem Demaçi was during the war. It happened on December 20, 1998 at the headquarters of the Dukagjin Operational Zone of the Kosovo Liberation Army in Jabllanicë, Gjakova. With some soldiers, I was descending from the hill with tall oaks of Jabllanicë (where today the martyrs' cemetery is), when I saw someone climbing up the hill. I couldn't believe it. It was Adem Demaçi. The surprise was not only mine. "Uh... are you here?" was the first word that Adem Demaçi said, still not greeted by surprise at the place and circumstances of the meeting. Bacë and I were used to seeing each other only at illegal meetings, at meetings and gatherings equipped with books, notebooks, pencils and computers, now we were meeting with uniforms and weapons. With joy and longing, we greeted him and Skender Kastrati, who accompanied him. Adem Demaçi had left for the Dukagjini Operational Zone Headquarters of the KLA, in the capacity of its General Political Representative.
I avoided one of the soldiers I had with me and told him to hurry ahead of us and notify Headquarters of Adem Demaçi's arrival and to make arrangements for his reception.
We crossed the road quickly. When we arrived at the entrance to the Headquarters, Maliq Ndreca, Commander of the 132nd Brigade “Myrtë Zeneli”, had lined up an honor platoon of soldiers. They stood disciplined and proud of their leader whom everyone knew. The plans we had made many years earlier for the establishment of the army had become a reality. Adem Demaçi was parading one of the rows of our Liberation Army.
At the Headquarters was the Deputy Commander of the Zone, Nazmi Brahimaj. Commander Ramush Haradinaj was on an inspection in another region of the Zone that day.
Adem Demaçi informed us that the OSCE verification mission official, Mr. Shën Bërns, will be here for a short time with his companions, with whom a joint meeting was held at the Dukagjini Zone Headquarters.
During his stay in the Zone, Adem Demaçi was interested in the state of the Army, developments on the ground, fighting, etc. Adem Demaçi was impressed with the development of the KLA in this area and expressed his sorrow for the fallen martyrs. Adem Demaçi on this occasion visited the wounded of the recent battles. In particular, he stopped and talked with the wounded Agron Rama who was the commander of the 134th Brigade “Bedri Shala”.
