According to Eurostat data, in 2021, cancer was the leading cause of death among men and women under the age of 65 in the EU.
Of all recorded deaths, 40.6 percent of women and 25.6 percent of men died from cancer in the mentioned age group. The other most common causes of death among women under 65 are circulatory diseases (14.9 percent), Covid-19 (10.2 percent) and respiratory diseases (4.2 percent).
In men, circulatory diseases (22 percent), Covid-19 (9,8 percent) and accidents (6,9 percent) were the leading causes of death, after cancer.
When it comes to people aged 65 and over, the leading causes of death in women are circulatory diseases (37.3 percent), cancer (16.9 percent), covid-19 (9.9 percent) and respiratory diseases (5.7 percent). ).
In men 65 years and older, the main reasons were the same, but with different proportions. Circulatory diseases (31.8 percent) were the leading cause, followed by cancer (23.3 percent), covid-19 (12.0 percent) and respiratory diseases (7.3 percent).
