Watchmaking giants are engaged in a "cold war" to design the thinnest mechanics in the world.
But it looks like an independent Russian watchmaker will sit on their throne. Moscow-based Konstantin Chaykin says his new “ThinKing” prototype, which he debuted at the Geneva watch fair, is just 1.65 millimeters thick.
He also believes it is among the lightest watches in the world, weighing just 13.3 grams without its strap. He said the watch features a mechanism, a double balance wheel, that allowed the manufacturer to reduce the number of layers in the watch movement.
Meanwhile, the mechanisms for winding the watch and adjusting its numbers are located in a separate 5.4-millimeter-thick case, freeing up space.
