Voters in Winterthur and Zurich will decide on their mayors today

Voters in Winterthur and Zurich will decide on their mayors today. In Winterthur, the first round of voting in early March was characterized by a close race between SP city councilor Kaspar Bopp and FDP city councilor Stefan Fritschi, albinfo.ch reports.

Bopp ultimately emerged victorious, with a narrow margin of votes. However, the finance director failed to secure an absolute majority, necessitating a second round, writes srf.ch. The current mayor, Michael Künzle (Centre Party), had served for 17 years.

In Zurich, the successor to Corinne Mauch (SP) who is retiring after 16 years has already been determined before the election, as the current head of SP social services, Raphael Golta, is the only candidate.

The successor to Mayor Corine Mauch (Social Democratic Party) is practically already decided. However, a second round of voting will take place.

On March 8, Raphael Golta of the Social Democratic Party received the most votes. However, he did not reach an absolute majority and is therefore not considered elected. The Zurich municipal code stipulates that the position of mayor must be elected by ballot, albinfo.ch reports. Therefore, Raphael Golta must face a second round of voting today, even though he is the only candidate for mayor.

In the first round, Raphael Golta faced competition from the center-right. However, his opponents were not elected to the Zurich City Government. Since only nine elected city councilors are eligible to participate in the second round, one of these councilors could have challenged him.
