The red carpet from the steps of the building where the Cannes Film Festival is held was changed every day from May 13 to 24, the duration of the event, and is now offered for sale at a price of one euro per kilogram.
A ton and a half of the red synthetic material worn by many world cinema stars this year is taking on a new life in Marseille in the hands of designers, for the needs of theater troupes or fashion shows.
"We sell it as a 'simple, thin carpet', not as a 'Cannes carpet'," Jeanne Re, coordinator of the Reserve des Arts, an association that recycles waste for creative purposes, told AFP. "We are not selling this fabric for marketing purposes, because it will be sold at the same price regardless. The goal is to make it available to as many members as possible. These are items that were not intended for reuse. By recycling them, we contribute to reducing the environmental impact of certain events, of which the Festival management is very aware," Re said.
"We make classic handbags from the Cannes carpet, but also wine bottle bags, hats, glasses cases, quite unique pieces," explained Elsa Ramouni-Yordikian, a client of Reserve des Arts and secretary of the Les Nippones association, which has been using pieces of the famous carpet for recycling for more than four years.
