President Donald Trump believes NATO was tested and failed during the war with Iran, White House spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt said, regarding the possibility of the US withdrawing from the alliance.
Leavitt added that the issue has been discussed by the president and will soon be discussed with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
"This is something that the President has discussed. And I think it's something that the President will discuss in a few hours with Secretary General Rutte. You will probably hear directly from the President after that meeting later this afternoon," the White House spokeswoman said.
The meeting between them comes at a difficult time in relations between the alliance and its largest member.
Trump has repeatedly criticized the alliance, calling it a "paper tiger" that has failed to come to America's aid during the conflict with Iran.
"They haven't been our friends when we needed them," Trump recently told Reuters.
