Although epidemiological data shows a decrease in the number of new cases, seasonal influenza continues to have serious consequences for the most vulnerable categories. The Public Health Institute reports that another victim has been registered, bringing the number of deaths since the start of the season to four.
The latest death is a 62-year-old man from Tetovo, who was admitted to the Infectious Diseases Department of the Clinical Hospital in the city due to a severe clinical picture.
The patient's laboratory confirmed Influenza A, and his condition further deteriorated due to existing chronic diseases. According to doctors, the patient had not been vaccinated against seasonal influenza, which posed an additional risk.
The Institute of Public Health states that, despite the deaths, the latest figures show an encouraging trend.
In the last week of January, 1,498 cases were recorded, which is a decrease of 12.3 percent compared to the previous week.
Compared to the same period last year, when the number of cases exceeded 3,000, this year's wave has a significantly lower intensity.
The highest number of cases was again recorded in Skopje – 473. A high number of cases was also recorded in Prilep with 146 cases and in Strumica with 139. In contrast, no cases of influenza were recorded in Berovo, Delchevo and Kriva Palanka.
According to the age structure, most of the infected are people aged 15 to 64, but the highest incidence was observed in children up to 4 years old. Experts emphasize that this is expected for this time of year, when viruses spread easily in groups such as kindergartens.
