Americans have revealed which states they like least, and according to a new ranking, Illinois tops the list as the most disliked state in the country. About 25 percent of its residents said they consider Illinois the worst place to live.

In second place is New Jersey, reinforcing its reputation as one of the most talked about and often joked about states in the US. It is followed by New York, where a significant portion of residents have admitted that they see their state as one of the least desirable to live in.

The ranking is compiled by analyzing three main factors: the percentage of residents who consider their country to be the worst place to live, changes in population, and how often other countries mention a country as the most unpopular "neighbor."

According to the analysis, dissatisfaction in some countries may be linked to the high cost of living, lack of job opportunities or changes in lifestyle. In other cases, historical rivalries, especially sporting and regional ones, seem to significantly influence public perception.

Illinois topped the list not only because of high levels of dissatisfaction among residents, but also because of its population decline. According to data included in the analysis, the state has lost about 0.54 percent of its population in recent years.

New Jersey, ranked second, has been criticized not only by residents but also by neighboring states. Five states named it their least favorite state, reflecting long-standing stereotypes about traffic, aggressive behavior on the streets, and its image in popular culture.

New York ranked third, despite being one of the most iconic destinations in the world. About 12 percent of residents described it as the worst place to live. Rivalries with other states, including Massachusetts, also appear to have contributed to the negative perception.

In fourth place is West Virginia, largely due to population decline and residents leaving in search of better opportunities. California, although often seen as a symbol of fame, technology and cultural influence, ranks fifth, as nine other states have named it as the most disliked state.

Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Connecticut and Kentucky complete the top ten. Connecticut in particular presents an interesting case: although it is not mentioned by other states as the most hated "neighbor", almost 17 percent of its residents have a negative opinion of living there.

However, researchers point out that the "most disliked" label does not necessarily mean that these countries do not have positive qualities.

The ranking reflects more local grievances, demographic shifts, economic challenges and cultural stereotypes that influence how Americans perceive the places they live. /GazetaExpress/
