"I don't think you can make that movie today..."

Richard Gere has stated that fans would only see a sequel to the popular 1990 romantic comedy Pretty Woman if the script was higher-end.

"It all depends on whether there's a good script," the 75-year-old actor told People. The film, which was directed by Garry Marshall, who died in 2016 at age 2016, tells the story of Edward Lewis (Gere), a businessman who takes on Vivian Ward (Julia Roberts), a sex worker, during a business trip to Los Angeles.

Reflecting on the film on The Hollywood Reporter's "Awards Chatter" podcast, Gere said: "I'm very proud of that movie and the process we went through to create it."

Although the actors still love their classic film, Julia Roberts has previously admitted that she doesn't think "Pretty Woman" could be made today.

"I don't think you could make that movie today," she told The Guardian in 2018. "There's a lot more that could be criticized, but that doesn't mean people can't still enjoy it," the actress added.

Richard Gere left his mark alongside Julia Roberts. The film, which was released in theaters in 1990, remains one of the most beloved and successful rom-coms to date, 35 years later.

In addition to the story, performances, costumes and songs, which also scored a big hit, Richard Gere and Julia Roberts convinced millions of viewers with their chemistry.
