Saying goodbye to a family dog is one of the most painful moments, but scientists may have found a way to postpone it. A new drug promises to extend the lives of dogs by at least a year.

A San Francisco startup is developing a daily, chewable pill for senior dogs that aims to slow the aging process.

The drug, called LOY-002, works by targeting metabolic dysfunction – one of the key factors of aging that is linked to diseases such as arthritis, cancer and cognitive decline.

It mimics the positive effects of calorie restriction, without the need for the dog to be placed on a strict diet.

Study in progress

So far, more than 1,300 dogs in the US have been enrolled in a study called “STAY,” conducted at 72 veterinary clinics. Some of them receive the drug, while others receive a placebo, and all are closely monitored.

The goal is to see if dogs receiving the treatment:

live longer

have less physical weakness

enjoy a better quality of life

develop fewer age-related diseases

The study began more than two years ago and is expected to last at least four years.

The first step towards approval

The drug has already received initial safety approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which means it could be released for use even before the full study is completed, if it passes the final stages of approval.

If this happens, it would be the first time an anti-aging drug has been approved for use in a species.

What does this mean for dogs?

According to researchers, for some dogs this can translate into an increase in lifespan of about 10%. But more importantly, it's the quality of life – less pain, more energy, and more active years.

Veterinarians point out that older dogs often start to move more slowly, tire more quickly, and lose interest in activities they once enjoyed. Such treatment can help extend their "good years."

Hope for humans too?

If the drug proves successful in dogs, it could pave the way for the development of similar treatments for humans in the future.

Care remains essential

Despite scientific developments, experts emphasize that a few simple steps remain very important for the longevity of dogs:

healthy eating

regular visits to the veterinarian

physical activity and daily games

On average, an average-sized dog lives 10–13 years, although some can live over 20 years.

If this drug proves effective, it could change the way we care for our pets – giving us more time with our most loyal friends. /GazetaExpress/
