A Golden Retriever owner was moved to tears when she discovered the heartwarming reason why her little dog always preferred to sleep in the same spot in the house.

8-week-old dog, Humphrey, had left his owner, Lily, confused with his insistence on sleeping under the TV cabinet in the living room.

"He did this for a few days and we didn't understand why," Lily confessed in a TikTok post.

She then explained that she had made a connection that “made a lot more sense.” Lily posted a photo of newborn Humphrey alongside his siblings, which seemed to provide an answer.

The photo shows small dogs huddled together in the same environment with their caregiver, sleeping peacefully and protected by a similar structure.

“I think it probably makes him feel closer to his brothers and sisters,” Lily reflected. “I can’t stop crying for him.”

Some TikTok users reacted with humor:

One user wrote: "Better freeze the cabinet so he can continue to sleep there when he grows up."

Another: “Dogs want to be ‘down,’ just like cats want to be ‘up’ or ‘in.’”

A third added: “Our Sheepie loves to sleep in her ‘huts’ under the bed, even though she has to move slowly under it.”

Lily later told Newsweek:

"We connected when my partner saw the photos the caregivers sent us from when Humphrey was a litter and we understood everything."

Now, Humphrey seems to have established a different routine, which puts Lily at ease:

"It's been 3.5–4 weeks since we've had him and I think he's forgotten, he sleeps in his own bed more now," she added.

Why do small dogs like to sleep in enclosed places?

Dog specialists Lords & Labradors explain that small dogs prefer enclosed spaces due to their natural instinct:

“Dogs are descendants of wolves, and the instinct to seek shelter is deep in their DNA. Just as wild animals seek shelter to protect themselves from predators and bad weather, your domestic dog instinctively seeks a safe, enclosed place to sleep, which gives them a sense of protection and security.”

Another reason is related to temperature control:

"The spaces below provide cooler places during hot weather. Conversely, during the winter, the space under the bed can be warmer, creating a comfortable environment for your dog," the specialists explain.

Also, some dogs value security and privacy, enjoying their own territory and quiet time "away from the noise and movement of the house." /GazetaExpress/
