The longest-running animated series in history, "The Simpsons," has built an incredible reputation over the years for its predictions that have often proven accurate.

Jokes and scenes that later became reality include Lady Gaga's flying entrance to the Super Bowl, the US facing killer wasps, a disease eerily similar to Covid-19, and Donald Trump in the White House.

But beyond the surprising predictions, the series' success also relies heavily on its beloved characters. For those who haven't been following the series regularly in recent years, we've lost characters like Fat Tony and Edna Krabappel, while Ned Flanders has become a widower again, following the death of his first wife, Maude.

"The Simpsons" is now in its 36th season, and in the season finale, the show's creators "killed off" Marge Simpson. The final episode, titled "Stranger Things," follows Bart and Lisa's relationship over the years, as Marge worries about the fact that they've drifted apart.

The episode then shows what life is like for them 35 years later, with Lisa having a successful career, while Bart runs an unlicensed nursing home.

Suddenly, Lisa and Bart talk about "the late mother," meaning that Marge died before she turned 70.

Homer also appears in the episode, living in a Florida asylum with Mr. Skinner and Milhouse, but Marge is nowhere to be seen. When Lisa finds a letter written by Marge, which was to be opened only after her death, she reunites with Bart and helps to escape Homer from Florida.

At the end, Marge is shown ascending to heaven with the help of Ringo Starr from The Beatles.

Fans have reacted on social media in shock at Marge's untimely death.
