In a surprise announcement, it has been confirmed that the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games will include an unprecedented event never before seen in Olympic history: the opening ceremony will be held in two different stadiums – for the first time in the history of the Games.
The grand event will be divided between:
Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum – which hosted the opening ceremonies in 1932 and 1984, and SoFi Stadium – a modern arena used by NFL teams, the Los Angeles Rams and Chargers, and which will also host games in the 2026 World Cup.
This innovation comes among other changes to the Olympic program, where new sports have been added such as:
Cricket – historic and much-anticipated comeback, especially with the sport's growing popularity in the US through Major League Cricket.
Flag football, baseball, softball, squash and lacrosse – which have already been confirmed as part of the LA 2028 program.
Organizers also announced that preparations have not been affected by the January and February fires in California, guaranteeing that everything is going according to plan.
An official statement from LA28 states:
"The two extraordinary arenas will create an unforgettable experience, welcoming fans from around the world to the Olympic and Paralympic Games like never before."
The symbolic ceremony of handing over the Olympic flag from Paris to Los Angeles during the closing of Paris 2024 included names such as Tom Cruise, Michael Johnson, Billie Eilish and Snoop Dogg, signaling the official start of the LA 2028 era. /GazetaExpress/
