A new form of cancer treatment that takes just one minute is expected to benefit tens of thousands of patients on the British NHS.
It is an immunological therapy in the form of an injection, known as Pembrolizumab, which helps the immune system fight cancer cells.
This treatment is effective for 14 different types of cancer, including lung, breast, head and neck cancer, as well as cervical cancer.
According to health authorities, this new method is expected to replace intravenous infusion, which can take up to two hours for each session.
The new injection is administered every three weeks in just 60 seconds, or every six weeks in about two minutes, reducing treatment time by about 90 percent.
Experts emphasize that this innovation not only eases the burden on patients, saving them time in the hospital, but also increases the health service's capacity to treat more people.
The drug works by blocking the PD-1 protein, which inhibits the immune response, enabling the body to more effectively identify and attack cancer cells.
However, like any therapy that affects the immune system, this treatment can be associated with side effects, such as fatigue, breathing problems, thyroid disorders, or inflammation in various organs.
More severe cases are rare and can occur regardless of the method of administration of the drug.
British authorities have described this development as an important step towards improving care for cancer patients, aiming for faster, more efficient and more convenient treatment for their daily lives. /GazetaExpress/
