Iran confirms extension of ceasefire with US, but leaves open possibility of future diplomatic moves, without committing to new talks with US.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghai, in statements broadcast by Iranian state television, avoided taking a clear position on whether Tehran is ready to participate in a new round of talks with Washington in Islamabad.
"Diplomacy is a means of ensuring national interests and security, and whenever we conclude that there are necessary and reasonable conditions for using this means to achieve national goals and strengthen the achievements of the Iranian nation against the malicious pursuits of enemies, we will take action," he said.
This stance is interpreted as an indication that the Iranian side is keeping the channels open, but without committing to an immediate resumption of negotiations.
At the same time, diplomats in Tehran make it clear that "without the lifting of the American blockade of Iranian ports, we will not return to negotiations. We will not negotiate under threats."
As diplomats point out, "communication with Pakistani mediators is underway to "fulfill the Islamic Republic's conditions" with the aim of resuming negotiations." /Panorama
