The State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) is no longer processing asylum applications from Iranian citizens due to the war in Iran. SEM announced this on Monday on the X news platform, albinfo reports.
SEM spokeswoman Anne Césard told the Keystone-SDA news agency that a possible regime change in Iran cannot be ruled out. Such a regime change would require a reassessment of the individual risk profiles of Iranian asylum seekers.
As Césard further stated, this is not the first time that the State Secretariat for Migration has suspended asylum decisions. “The SEM adapts its asylum practices to the situation in the respective countries,” Césard said.
SEM also announced on Monday that it had suspended the deportation of Iranians with negative asylum decisions. Exceptions are made for those convicted of crimes and those considered a threat to public security. The reason given was that, due to the rapidly changing situation in Iran, a final assessment of the reasonableness of such deportations was not possible.
