The Association for Health Education and Research HERA announced that in cooperation with the Macedonian Association of Gynecologists and Obstetricians MAGO they will work on the preparation of a National Guide for Fertility Preservation in Women and Men. The aim is to shift the focus from treatment to prevention, as well as to enable people to have children when they want, reports Gazeta Express from Portalb.mk.

HERA emphasizes that this type of document will be prepared for the first time in our country, and a multidisciplinary group of experts will work on it, including specialist gynecologists-obstetricians, a psychiatrist, a family gynecologist, a family medicine specialist, a urologist, a nutritionist and representatives from the Ministry of Health.

"Few children are being born in Macedonia, and more and more people are facing infertility problems. With a fertility rate of around 1.5 children per woman, significantly below the 2.1 level needed for natural population renewal, the country is already facing serious demographic challenges. So far, fertility in the country has been addressed mainly only when options have already diminished, that is, when people are facing infertility and seeking treatment," HERA points out.

The multidisciplinary approach, the organization informs, allows fertility risk factors to be considered from multiple aspects and guidelines to be developed for healthcare professionals, collaborators and the general population. They will enable health education of doctors and citizens about the factors that can affect their reproductive health, the implementation of positive influences and protection from negative influences, and how to preserve fertility throughout the lifespan in girls, boys, women and men.

“The goal is simple, but essential, to treat fertility as a value that is protected in time, and not as a problem that is solved too late. Fertility should not be a topic only when a problem already exists. It is a health resource that must be protected in time – from young people, through prevention, information and early recognition of risks. With this initiative, HERA and MAGO are opening a new approach to public health in our country, which implies systemic, preventive and long-term care for fertility, a topic that has been present in the public for years, but rarely receives specific preventive policies”, emphasizes HERA.

Infertility is a medical condition in which a couple is unable to conceive after one year of regular sexual intercourse without using contraception. It can be primary, when a couple has never been pregnant, or secondary, when pregnancy has occurred before but is no longer possible. The causes of infertility can be related to both the woman and the man and include hormonal disorders, ovulation problems, blocked fallopian tubes, low sperm count or quality, as well as other factors such as age, stress, and lifestyle. In many cases, infertility can be treated with medical therapy, surgery, or assisted reproductive techniques.
