Chelsea have been heavily fined by UEFA for breaching financial sustainability rules in the final years of 2023 and 2024.
European football's top organization has imposed a fine of 27 million pounds on the Londoners, dividing it into two categories:
£17.3 million for non-compliance with football earnings rules.
£9.5 million for exceeding team cost restrictions.
Chelsea was one of five clubs punished for breaching earnings rules and one of four clubs that exceeded squad spending limits.
This punishment could be followed by an even heavier fine in the future, as the spending rule for the team will be reduced from 80% of revenue in 2024 to 70% from next season.
If Chelsea fall into further breaches of the rules, they could face an additional fine of up to £52 million.
Chelsea's Premier League rivals Aston Villa have also been fined by UEFA, but to a lesser extent. The Midlands club have been punished with:
£9.5 million unconditional (£4.3 million for profits and £5.2 million for team costs).
And it could face a potential fine of £15 million, in the event of further breaches.
Both clubs have accepted official agreements with UEFA and disciplinary measures for them are part of the regulated agreements.
UEFA clarified that the "unconditional" fines will apply in the 2025/26 and 2026/27 seasons, while the "conditional" ones will come into effect in 2027/28, if clubs report losses for 2026.
If they exceed the set limits again in 2027, the penalties will also apply in 2028/29.
In total, nine clubs have been punished according to disciplinary findings, including Barcelona, Lyon, Porto, Panathinaikos and Besiktas.
Barcelona have been fined an unconditional £13m for lost football revenue and face a possible £52m fine. They will be under strict scrutiny for the next two years.
Lyon have been fined £10.8m unconditionally and a possible fine of up to £43m, while they will be under monitoring for four years.
Only two clubs — Roma and Istanbul Basaksehir — have been found to have breached previous agreements with UEFA./Express newspaper/
