A new study from the US has found that eating five servings of fruits and vegetables a day can significantly improve sleep quality, even within less than 24 hours.
Researchers from the University of Chicago observed 34 healthy young men and found that those who consumed at least five cups of fruits and vegetables per day had a 16% increase in sleep quality, compared to those who consumed none.
Also, those who chose healthier carbohydrates, such as whole grains, had more restful sleep and fewer interruptions during the night.
According to scientists:
Fiber-rich fruits and vegetables positively impact the gut microbiome, which affects sleep neurotransmitters like serotonin and melatonin.
Eating red and processed meat was associated with greater sleep fragmentation.
Dr. Esra Tasali, one of the study's authors, called the discovery "remarkable," adding that this dietary change could be a natural, inexpensive, and effective way to improve sleep.
Important facts:
Around 5 million people in the UK suffer from chronic insomnia.
Only 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men manage to eat 5 servings of fruits and vegetables per day.
Prices of fresh produce have increased by an average of 39%, making it difficult to meet this quota.
Insomnia is linked to increased risks for diseases such as cancer, stroke, and infertility.
Dr. Marie-Pierre St-Onge emphasized: “Small changes can have a big impact on our sleep. This is encouraging – good sleep is within our control.” /GazetaExpress/
