Russian and Belarusian athletes will return to full competition starting with the Paralympic Winter Games, which will take place in Milan and Cortina from March 6 to 15.
This means that the suspension imposed on the two states in 2022 immediately after the aggression in Ukraine has been lifted.
Since then, Russian and Belarusian athletes have competed in the Olympic and Paralympic Games under the neutral flag of the International Olympic Committee, without symbols and a national anthem.
This will change, starting with the competition following the Winter Olympics. The International Paralympic Committee clarified that there will be restrictions on the number of athletes who can represent Russia and Belarus.
Thus, there are 6 places for Russian athletes and 4 for Belarusian ones, who will be presented for the first time since 2022 with national symbols.
It could not have happened otherwise and this decision has been accompanied by a lot of controversy, while the strongest reactions have come from Kiev, writes abcnews.
Ukraine disagrees with the lifting of the suspension for Russia and Belarus.
The anger of the Ukrainian Olympic Committee has been amplified after the suspension of athlete Vladyslav Heraskevych from the Winter Olympics because of his helmet in honor of his colleagues who lost their lives during the Russian aggression.
