Postman confused by road signs that "make no sense" while delivering mail

A Royal Mail postman was surprised to discover road signs that, according to him, "simply don't make sense".

Sim Lewis, who works for the Royal Mail, was delivering mail in Letchworth Garden City, Hertfordshire, when he noticed a strange road that left him confused. He named the road “Penny Farthing Lane,” after the old bicycle with the large front wheel. This was not his first encounter with this unusual road, which is designed in a way that has confused many people.

In a TikTok video, Sim was filmed saying: "Guys, what's going on; I had to come back here today because yesterday you were going crazy in the comments."

He pointed to the other similar sign on the road, where the two arrows indicate the one-way direction of the road.

However, the postman noticed another puzzling problem: “I don’t understand why there are arrows… it’s one-way, but I saw some comments about something that doesn’t make sense at all. Anywhere there’s a lowered sidewalk, the space continues the same. There’s no separation, so someone can park in your driveway and justify it as a parking space.”

Parking signs painted on the asphalt show no interruptions, confirming that Sim’s observation is correct – driveways can be blocked by parked vehicles without technically breaking the rules. He commented: “This is the strangest way to get a parking permit I’ve ever seen.”

In the TikTok comments, users expressed their opinions. One wrote: “I think someone from the local council was having a bad day that day.”

Another said: "Can you tag the local council of the area to ask what's going on because this can't be right."

A third added: "You should turn around when people have parked on both sides!"

Some commenters related the situation to their own experience: “There are streets where in the morning you park on one side and in the afternoon on the other. The free side is for daily traffic, so it makes sense. Do the hours change on the signs?”

A North Herts Council spokesman explained: “The structure of Souberie Avenue is similar to other roads in the area. Parking on the lowered pavement is an offence and our Civil Enforcement Officers can issue fines.

If vehicles block the road by parking across from each other, this is considered an obstruction and enforcement is the duty of the police. Continuous parking signs help avoid confusion about lowered sidewalks, while the arrow on the signs shows where the restrictions change. We encourage drivers to park carefully to maintain access and keep the roads clear for everyone.” /GazetaExpress/
