President Vjosa Osmani has issued a decree dissolving the Parliament after it failed to elect a new president last night.
She said she knows that this decree can be challenged in the Constitutional Court, but said it is a decision she is proud of.
"I am fully aware and ready that this decree can be challenged in the Court of Justice and I want to say it openly and I have never been prouder of this decision. I am much more comfortable facing a challenge for action in defense of the Constitution than for inaction when its foundations are at risk."
She said that the greatest responsibility is not to be liked by the politics of the day, but to be "on the side of the Constitution and the interests of the Republic."
"Serious states are built on this principle: The law above all, in this case the Constitution above all."
She said that not issuing the decree would lead to a violation of the Constitution. /Express/
