President Vjosa Osmani said that the amendments she submitted to the Assembly for the election of the President have nothing to do with her ability to run in new elections, as they would create conditions for the election of the president by the people only after five years.
She said that her action yesterday came at a time of "a tense political climate" and said that at this time "every action is viewed with suspicion and every decision is interpreted beyond what may be true."
"These amendments would have no effect on the election of the president who should have been elected by last night, that is, for the immediate successor to my mandate. The reason is very simple. The amendments themselves provide that the procedure for direct election by the people should begin six months before the end of the current president's mandate. Even if these amendments were approved last night, they would not change anything regarding the election of my successor. The deadline for the election of my successor was last night at midnight, he would be elected by the Assembly, and only after five years would the opportunity for direct election by the people be created."
"This has nothing to do with my mandate because the possibility of elections by the people would only be created after five years, according to those amendments, not now. So, it had nothing to do with the possibility of me running in new elections now."/Express/
