A new study has raised concerns about the way one of the most common drugs for stomach problems, omeprazole, is used, warning that prolonged and uncontrolled use could have health consequences.

Omeprazole, often prescribed for heartburn, acid reflux and digestive problems, has been studied by scientists in Brazil, who have found that its inappropriate use can lead to mineral deficiencies in the body and increase the risk of two serious conditions: anemia and osteoporosis.

According to research published in the scientific journal ACS Omega, researchers from the Federal University of São Paulo have found that long-term use of omeprazole can affect mineral absorption, damaging bone health and increasing the risk of bone weakening.

Researcher Andréa Santana de Brito emphasized that the problem does not lie in the drug itself, but in its indiscriminate use: according to her, many people use it for long periods even for mild symptoms such as heartburn, which is not recommended.

In the UK, omeprazole and similar drugs can be obtained by prescription, while some forms are also available over the counter from pharmacies. The NHS advises that over-the-counter medication should not be used for more than two weeks and that you should consult a doctor if symptoms persist or worsen.

Even when taken as directed, omeprazole can cause side effects such as headache, nausea, abdominal pain, constipation, or diarrhea.

The Brazilian study was conducted on laboratory animals and showed that prolonged use of the drug changes the way the body absorbs and distributes nutrients. In the mice, changes were observed in the blood, liver and spleen, as well as disturbances in mineral levels.

The results showed increased calcium and decreased iron in the blood, which may be linked to the risk of anemia and osteoporosis. However, the researchers emphasize that further studies are needed to confirm these results in humans.

Osteoporosis is a condition that weakens bones and makes them more fragile, increasing the risk of fractures, often without any obvious warning signs. Meanwhile, anemia causes symptoms such as fatigue, dizziness, paleness and a rapid heartbeat.

Doctors emphasize that treating these conditions requires medical care and dietary changes, including increasing consumption of iron-rich foods and, in some cases, the use of specific medications. /GazetaExpress/
