Gennaro Gattuso has been officially appointed as the new coach of the Italy national team. "He is a symbol of Italian football," said FIGC President Gabriele Gravina.
A press conference will be held in Rome on Thursday, June 19.
"Gattuso is a symbol of Italian football," said Federation head Gravina.
"The Azzurri jersey is like a second skin for him. His motivation, professionalism and experience will be essential to face the National Team's future challenges."
Aware of the importance of the objective we want to achieve, I thank him for the willingness and full commitment with which he accepted this challenge, sharing the FIGC's project for the overall development of our football, with the Azzurri at the center of the strategy."
As a footballer, Gattuso was part of the 2006 World Cup-winning team and has played 73 matches for the national team.
He was also part of the team that won the European Under-21 Championship in 2000.
The former coach of Milan, Napoli, Valencia, Olympique Marseille and Hajduk Split was free after the termination of his contract with the Croatian club, just one season after his appointment.
Italy sacked coach Luciano Spalletti after a 3-0 defeat to Norway that opened their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign, but kept him on to lead a 2-0 win over Moldova on Monday.
An offer was initially made to Claudio Ranieri, but he wished to fulfill his promise to be a special advisor to Roma and retire from management.
Italy's next match is against Estonia on September 5, and then against Israel on September 8.
