North Korea has said it has finished building a new housing district in Pyongyang for the families of Korean soldiers killed fighting alongside Russian forces in Ukraine, the latest effort by leader Kim Jong-un to honor the war dead.

In photos released by state media, Kim is seen walking along a new road and visiting the homes of several families with his daughter, believed to be Kim Yu-ae, as he vowed to repay the "young martyrs" who "sacrificed everything for their motherland," the newspaper wrote. "The Guardian".

Kim said the new residential district in the capital's Hawasong area symbolizes the "spirit and sacrifice" of fallen soldiers, adding that the goal of the new homes is for families to "be proud of their sons and husbands and live happily."

In recent months, North Korea has stepped up propaganda to glorify its soldiers sent to fight in Russia's war against Ukraine, including unveiling a new memorial complex in Pyongyang with sculptures of soldiers. Analysts see this as an effort to strengthen internal unity and quell potential popular discontent.

Kim has sent thousands of soldiers and large amounts of military equipment, including artillery and missiles, in recent months to support President Vladimir Putin's war against Ukraine.

Last week, the North Korean leader pledged to "unconditionally support" all of the Russian president's policies and decisions.
