American theoretical physicist David Gross, winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics, has issued a stark warning about the future of humanity, suggesting that global dangers could lead it towards an existential crisis much sooner than thought.

Gross, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in 2004 for discoveries in the field of theoretical physics, emphasizes that the greatest threats today are nuclear war and the uncontrolled development of artificial intelligence.

According to him, the probability of a global nuclear conflict remains worrying and has increased in recent decades.

In a recent interview, he suggested that the chance of an individual living another 50 years is relatively low, citing a rough estimate of about 35 years due to the risk of nuclear war.

He added that, if current trends continue, a global catastrophe could occur within this century.

Gross emphasizes that the situation has worsened following the breakdown of nuclear arms control agreements and the escalation of international tensions, including conflicts and rivalries between great powers and countries with nuclear capabilities.

Another major concern, he said, is the growing role of advanced technologies, especially artificial intelligence. He warns that the automation of military systems and the use of AI in rapid decision-making could create dangerous and unpredictable situations.

In extreme scenarios, critical decisions about the use of nuclear weapons could be delegated to intelligent systems, which, while advanced, are not infallible and could produce inaccurate results.

However, in conclusion, the physicist emphasizes that nuclear weapons are a creation of humanity - and as such, their elimination remains in the hands of people themselves. /GazetaExpress/
