Germany has reacted to the new institutional crisis in Kosovo. At the Federal Press Conference in Berlin, the spokesman for the German Foreign Ministry, Martin Giese, stressed the importance of functional institutions in the country. “Kosovo needs functional institutions,” he said.

According to the German government, this is also important for the continuation of the normalization dialogue led by the European Union between Kosovo and Serbia. "The integration of Serbia and Kosovo into the EU can only be achieved through this normalization dialogue," Giese said, dw reports.

The reaction comes after Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani dissolved the Kosovo Assembly. Previously, the Kosovo Parliament failed to elect the country's president. The institutional situation is now expected to be clarified through decisions of the Constitutional Court. If the Constitutional Court confirms the president's decision, Kosovo could face its third parliamentary elections in just over a year.

Germany has a political interest in a stable Kosovo, as security in the Western Balkans is considered strategically important for Europe. Since 1999, Germany has participated in the NATO Kosovo Force (KFOR) mission and can currently deploy up to 400 Bundeswehr soldiers to the country if needed.
