Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has nominated US President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize. At the start of a dinner at the White House on Monday (07.07.), he praised to reporters “the efforts for peace and security that you are leading in many countries, but now especially in the Middle East.” “As we speak he is creating peace, in one country, in one region after another.” Netanyahu then handed Trump a letter that he said he had sent to the Nobel Committee nominating the US president for the Peace Prize. “You deserve it and you should get it.”
“Wow,” Trump responded in surprise. “That’s very significant, coming from you.” Trump said the proposal was new to him. The US president has long described himself as a peacemaker and has made clear his desire for the Nobel Prize.
Netanyahu: Talks on Palestinian displacement underway
Trump and Netanyahu also discussed the potential relocation of Palestinians. The Israeli prime minister said Israel is working with the United States to find places that offer a better future for Palestinians. “If people want to stay, they can stay. But if they want to leave, they should be able to leave.” Asked about plans for the relocation of Palestinians, Trump said there was good cooperation with Israel’s neighboring countries.
Regarding the current status of indirect talks between Israel and Hamas to reach a ceasefire and release hostages, US Special Representative for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, who was present at the dinner with Trump and Netanyahu, said there is a possibility of reaching a deal soon. According to the White House, Witkoff will travel to the Qatari capital, Doha, this week to participate in mediation talks.
Trump also announced that his administration is holding talks with Iran. “We have planned talks with Iran and they want to talk,” Trump said. “They want to talk.” According to US special envoy Witkoff, the meeting between US and Iranian representatives could take place next week. Trump suggested lifting sanctions against Iran at a later date. /DW
