Real Madrid are looking to bring in a new coach this season, and it is increasingly looking like former boss José Mourinho could be the choice. The SL Benfica boss has one year left on his contract in Lisbon, but is already in talks with Los Blancos.
Mourinho denied last week that he had any contact with Real Madrid, but he is reported to have held a video call with the club this week. During that meeting, he outlined his demands and conditions for a possible return. Diario AS reports that Álvaro Arbeloa's continued stay on the bench has been ruled out.
The Madrid-based newspaper explains that Benfica president Rui Costa, along with his staff, have tried to renew Mourinho's contract in recent weeks, but without success. They are now looking for alternatives, as they expect his departure. It is also noted that Mourinho has a release clause of 3 million euros in his contract, which would allow Real Madrid to transfer him easily.
The report adds that the Santiago Bernabéu hierarchy believe Mourinho is the best option to "implement the necessary changes" in the dressing room. It has even been reported that president Florentino Pérez is in favour of his return, while other options such as Unai Emery, Mauricio Pochettino, Didier Deschamps and Massimiliano Allegri seem less clear.
These changes in the dressing room are directly related to the tension, atmosphere and lack of discipline at Valdebebas. Just this week, it was reported that Kylian Mbappé had a heated argument with a coach, while last month Antonio Rüdiger hit Álvaro Carreras, which was confirmed by the player himself. On Wednesday, just four days before El Clásico, Aurélien Tchouaméni and Fede Valverde were also nearly involved in a fight during training.
