The German Embassy in Kosovo has welcomed the sentence of Kosovar Murat Dernjani to years in prison for crimes against humanity in Iraq and Syria.
The German Embassy said that this is a very important moment for Kosovar justice and for judicial innovation in Kosovo.
"For the first time, video testimony has been admitted as evidence in a trial in Kosovo," the embassy announced, adding that this procedural breakthrough has enabled survivors in Germany to testify remotely, in pursuit of justice.
"This directly contributed to the 20-year prison sentence of Murat Dernjani, a former member of the 'Islamic State', who was convicted of crimes against humanity against Yazidi girls in Syria and Iraq."
The decision, the German Embassy said, "sends a clear message: impunity for such crimes will not be tolerated – and justice can be served across borders."
This is also "a powerful example of German-Kosovar cooperation in the rule of law, where shared values meet practical impact," the embassy said.
