The World Meteorological Organization has warned that an El Niño could develop by mid-2026, with major consequences for temperatures and rainfall patterns around the world.

Meteorologists say the development of a strong, so-called super El Niño could also affect this summer, and have even more pronounced consequences during 2026 and 2027.

Climatologist Daniel Swain of the California Institute for Water Resources estimates that both years could bring global temperature records.

Super El Niño refers to a particularly strong warming of the Pacific Ocean surface, which disrupts weather patterns on several continents. The consequences of such a phenomenon can be more intense heat waves, droughts, heavy rainfall and flooding. The text also says that the lands in Germany have already dried up.

According to data from the World Meteorological Organization, the previous El Niño was recorded in 2023 and 2024, and contributed to 2024 being the warmest year since records began.

Climatologist Tido Semmler from the Irish Meteorological Service warned that the consequences of the next phase could be even stronger in 2027 because, as he explained, the Earth's atmosphere needs time to react to El Niño.

Fire experts are also warning of increased risk. They point out that El Niño increases the likelihood of extreme heat and drought in Australia, Canada, the United States and the Amazon rainforest.

Meteorologist and climate specialist Jeff Berardelli told American WFLA-TV that he believes we will experience weather events that have not been seen in modern history.

The Severe Weather Europe weather service states that Europe expects a sudden change in weather at the end of this month, when a strong thermal dome will develop that will "lock in" hot air and bring extremely high temperatures.
