German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that his position is in line with that of US President Donald Trump regarding the overthrow of the Iranian regime.
He stressed that their talks include not only the issue of security in the Middle East, but also the prospects for a new government in Tehran that will ensure peace and freedom, Top Channel reported.
“We are on the same page in terms of bringing down this terrible regime in Tehran. And we will talk about tomorrow, what will happen,” said Merz, sitting next to Trump in the Oval Office. He added: “We all hope that this war will end as soon as possible. We hope that the Israeli and American military are doing the right things to end this and to have a new government in place.”
The meeting between the two leaders also included discussions on the US-Germany trade deal, which Merz said he would like to approve as soon as possible. He noted that the situation in Ukraine is also on the agenda, indicating that cooperation between the two countries is not limited to the Middle East.
The Trump administration has argued that the attacks on Iran were a response to the "imminent threat" and the risk of Tehran building nuclear weapons, but has also called for the Iranian people to take control of their country, leaving open the discussion of possible successors without directly linking the war to regime change.
