Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said that the opening of the Strait of Hormuz is a fundamental principle of international law, applicable to "any other strait or sea channel."
She goes on to say that ceasefires in Lebanon and Iran must "be an integral part of any serious negotiation process to resolve the crisis in the Middle East."
She also says it is "vital" that Iran abandons "its pursuit of nuclear weapons."
Meloni adds that the mission that British Prime Minister Starmer announced will focus on ships that are now in the area around the strait, ensuring that there are no mines and providing security to the shipping industry.
It calls this a "purely defensive mission" and says Italy will provide "a certain number of naval units."
