Kylian Mbappe believes France has the most talented team in history, but it is still not as strong as the 2018 World Cup champions.

Zinedine Zidane is one of the greatest footballers of all time and has also enjoyed tremendous success as coach of Real Madrid.

He won the Champions League once as a Real player and three times in a row as a coach, but has shown little desire to manage outside the club where he reached his peak as a footballer.

The 53-year-old is often linked with the biggest management positions in world football and is reportedly on the list of candidates for the Fenerbahçe bench, left vacant after the departure of Jose Mourinho.

However, Zidane's desire to stay out of the spotlight has raised doubts about his readiness to take on the toughest jobs in football, with many believing the only position that would seriously tempt him is that of the France national team - where he won the 1998 World Cup and the 2000 European Championship.

His captain in both triumphs, Didier Deschamps, has been France's coach since 2012. He is also a serial winner as a player and as a coach, leading Les Bleus to the finals of the last two World Cups, including a historic triumph in Russia in 2018 against Croatia.

But all good things come to an end, and few national team coaches spend a decade in charge – let alone 13 years like Deschamps.

Mbappe's stance on Zidane

Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappe spoke to L'Equipe about the possibility of Zidane taking over as France manager and was quite positive.

"Nobody will say no. Only he can say no," Mbappe said.

"If it's him, great! If it's someone else, great again. But he's the only one in the history of French football who has almost all the rights."

Is this the best France of all time?

Mbappe was also asked if the current generation could be considered France's most talented team.

"The most talented team, yes. The strongest, not yet. The one with the most potential, yes. It's endless," he said.

"In every position, our players are starters at the best clubs in the world. We just have to show it. But as a team, we are still not stronger than the team that was declared world champion in 2018 or the one that played in the final in 2022."

"Does this team have the potential to be the best in history? 100%. Will it happen? It depends on us."

France, which has already secured a play-off spot from the last Nations League campaign, started World Cup qualification with two wins.
