Hard margarine of all foods contains the most trans fatty acids, which are harmful to health and promote hyperactivity, aggression and irritability in children and adults
Trans fats in margarine and various forms of fast food promote aggressive behavior and therefore should not be given to children at school, a University of California study of 945 children has shown.
Those who eat more trans-fatty acids consistently are more aggressive, nervous and hyperactive than others, scientists have told the Daily Mail.
"By checking someone's food, we can predict their aggressiveness and find indicators of their behavior. For this reason, those chemicals should be avoided in the food of school children, prisoners and other social groups", concluded the leader of the study, dr. Beatrice Golomb.
Trans fatty acids are formed by hydrogenation, the process of adding hydrogen atoms to vegetable oils to change from a liquid to a solid state. It is also used to improve the taste, but also to extend the shelf life of products.
Hard margarine of all foods contains the most trans fatty acids, averaging 20 to 50 percent.
Those chemicals have long been known for their health damage, as they increase cholesterol, insulin resistance, increase the risk of heart disease and various inflammations, and now for the first time they are also linked to behavior, explains Golomb.
