Mansfield Town footballer Lucas Akins has returned to full training after completing his prison sentence after admitting causing the death of a cyclist due to a "moment of carelessness" while driving.
The 36-year-old was sentenced to 14 months in prison by Leeds Crown Court in April and had his licence suspended for two years after hitting cyclist Adrian Daniel with his Mercedes G-Wagon in March 2022 as he emerged from a difficult rural junction.
Daniel, a father of one, was returning from work when he was hit and died in hospital 10 days later from severe head injuries. The moment of the accident was recorded by the camera on his helmet.
Mansfield Town, which had continued to field Akins after he pleaded guilty, announced on Thursday that it had retained his player registration and that he had been reintegrated into the first team, even though his contract expired in the summer.
"In line with the principles of rehabilitation and reintegration, the club believes that Lucas, having served his sentence, should have the opportunity to resume his professional career," the club's statement said.
Akins has again expressed deep regret for the tragic event and acknowledges the profound impact this tragedy has had on Mr. Daniel's family.
Mansfield also expressed condolences to the victim's family:
"Our thoughts remain with all those affected by this tragic accident."
Akins last played in the 5-1 defeat to Reading on April 21. In June, the club announced that it was "reviewing its position in relation to Lucas".
