Macedonia: Court rules that all citizens, including expatriates, will be treated as “residents”

Good news for Macedonian expatriates comes after the Constitutional Court ruled that all citizens registered in 2021, including those in exile, should be treated as "residents" and no longer divided into "resident" and "non-resident" categories, reports albinfo.

It is worth noting that the decision comes after the initiative of the European Front MP, Skender Rexhepi, who submitted the case to the Constitutional Court, opposing the division that, according to him and many Albanian organizations, violated civic equality and reduced the weight of the diaspora in official statistics.

Meanwhile, the Union of Albanian Associations of Gostivar in Exile emphasized that it has been at the forefront of this cause, describing this decision as one of the greatest victories of the Albanian diaspora in the last decade.

"We fought for Gostivar, but Albanians won," reads the reaction of the Union, which had raised this issue as a concern and appealed for intervention against this discrimination, which was committed with the 2021 census.

MP Skender Rexhepi had submitted to the Constitutional Court a request to review parts of the 2021 census methodology, which divided citizens into "residents" and "non-residents".

He argued that this division was contrary to the principles of equality and fair representation of citizens, especially towards Albanians in exile, who were treated as second-class citizens.
