Lamborghini gives up on electric cars: "Nobody wants them!"

One of the largest international car brands has confirmed plans to abandon electric cars, as customer interest has dropped significantly.

Iconic sports car brand Lamborghini has scrapped plans to launch the all-electric Lanzador model, opting to focus on plug-in hybrid cars.

Initially, Lamborghini expected to launch the Lanzador before 2028, while a fully electric version of the Urus model was expected to enter the market by at least 2030. But company executives have changed their mind, admitting that there was no demand for electric models among luxury car enthusiasts.

Lamborghini explained:

“The initial path envisioned the introduction of a fully electric Urus by the end of the decade, followed by a fourth line also electric.

However, after extensive analysis and ongoing dialogue with dealers and customers, it became clear that the adoption of BEV vehicles has slowed significantly, especially in the luxury sports car segment, where demand remains very limited.”

Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann admitted that developing electric cars could become an “expensive hobby” for the brand. He told The Sunday Times that the “acceptance curve” for electric models among Lamborghini customers was now “close to zero.”

Lamborghini stressed that hybrid technology is currently “the most suitable solution” for the brand. These powertrains offer the combination of significant CO2 reductions with “the emotional performance that defines Lamborghini’s DNA.” The Italian company added that the next-generation Urus will be introduced as a plug-in hybrid when it hits the road in 2029.

Stephan Winkelmann emphasized:

“Electric cars, in their current form, struggle to provide this specific emotional connection.”

Lamborghini is one of the most profitable brands in the world, with a company valuation of around €20 billion.

It is not the only manufacturer to have reassessed plans for an electric future: Stellantis, the parent company of major brands such as Vauxhall and Citroen, admitted it would reduce production of electric cars after a financial loss of around €21 billion.

Even the American brand Ford has confirmed plans to significantly revise its EV strategy, focusing on a broader combination of engines. /GazetaExpress/
