Prime Minister Albin Kurti said he is optimistic about reaching a "political agreement" with the Democratic League of Kosovo.
After a meeting in Parliament with LDK leader Lumir Abdixhiku, Kurti said that the President's issue was not the only one that was discussed.
"The main issue that was discussed, but I must say, not the only one, is precisely the fact that we have three weeks left until the election of the President and for this we must maximize our efforts," he said.
Kurti said that the meeting with Abdixhiku "took place in a constructive and friendly atmosphere."
"We are determined to avoid new elections, because new elections would not be a solution for the number of 80 deputies," he said.
"I continue to be optimistic that with such meetings and talks we will be able to reach a political agreement, but I cannot say that we have this today. Except the constructive atmosphere on the one hand and the willingness to avoid new elections, which are not a new solution, on the other hand, makes me optimistic about these remaining three weeks, which I hope we do not use until the day, or sometimes as is happening in our institutions, the last hour," Kurti said.
The Prime Minister was asked about the options that were considered in today's meeting, and said that they must maintain the "confidentiality of the talks."
"Now, we are leaders of entities that are democratic and we are transparent regarding the process, but nevertheless the meeting was 'tête-à-tête' and we must maintain the confidentiality of the talks," he said.
"When the talks and initiatives bring concrete results, then we will be able to respond concretely about the achievements. But as long as this is not the case, we cannot talk about the opinions we express there, which have neither brought failure nor success," Kurti said.
This was the fourth meeting between Kurti and Abdixhiku on the issue of the President, and the first after the Constitutional Court's ruling, which gave a deadline of 34 days for the election of the new head of state.
The Constitutional Court ruled on March 25 that the President must be elected within 34 days, declaring a decree by President Vjosa Osmani to dissolve the Parliament without legal effect.
Speaker of Parliament Albulena Haxhiu became acting President on Saturday - a position she can hold for a maximum of 6 months - while Vjosa Osmani completed her five-year term as President.
The possibility of Osmani being re-elected president appears to have been definitively rejected on March 5, when Kurti's party, the Vetëvendosje Movement, announced that they had proposed Glauk Konjufca, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, as head of state.
