American actress Kerry Washington, known for her role in the famous series Scandal, continues to challenge stereotypes in the television industry.

After her historic success as the first black woman to lead a television series on a major American network in nearly 40 years, she now returns with a new project – the thriller "Imperfect Women."

The new series, based on the novel by Araminta Hall and produced by Apple TV, reunites Washington with actresses Elisabeth Moss and Kate Mara in a murder mystery that centers on friendship between women – with all the love, rivalry, secrets and loyalty that entails.

Washington says the series focuses on the reality of women who are not perfect. According to her, society often puts pressure on women to look and behave a certain way.

"When women break the rules and show their messy or complicated sides, it becomes very interesting to the public," she says.

In “Imperfect Women,” the story revolves around three old college friends: Eleanor (Kerry Washington), a successful philanthropist from a wealthy family; Nancy (Kate Mara), who has married into an elite family despite her humble background; and Mary (Elisabeth Moss), a writer and stay-at-home mother. Over time, their relationship is tested by family secrets, trauma, and social tensions.

The actress says that one of the main goals of the series is to allow viewers to see the same events from different perspectives. “In a time when people are increasingly divided and rarely try to understand the other person’s perspective, this is a way to exercise empathy,” she explains.

Washington is also executive producing the project through her company Simpson Street. She says the fact that many actresses have also become producers has helped create more complex roles for women. “We’re not waiting to be invited to parties anymore. We’re throwing our own parties,” she says.

However, the actress acknowledges that the representation of women of color on television still faces challenges. While the situation has improved, she notes that in some cases there is also a backlash against efforts for greater inclusion.

Washington believes that telling stories that include people from different groups is not necessarily political. “When I tell my story, I’m not doing politics — I’m just telling a human story,” she says.

The actress also spoke about a phenomenon that has made her very popular on the internet: her expressive facial expressions that often turn into viral memes and gifs. Although she sees them with humor, Washington says that emotions are an essential part of her profession.

She adds that she is not against aesthetic treatments and taking care of her appearance. "I like to be proactive about aging gracefully," she says, adding that her work as an actress requires one important thing: feeling and expressing emotions. /GazetaExpress/
