Judge of the Special Court (GJKKO) Erjon Çela has decided not to change the security measure for former Albanian President Ilir Meta, leaving him in "prison arrest".
Meta had requested to be released from prison, arguing that the investigations against him have been closed and the case has been sent to trial, so there is no longer a risk of evidence being destroyed. However, his request was rejected.
The former president of Albania was arrested on October 21, 2024, and is facing charges of corruption, money laundering, and concealment of assets. The charges are related to SMI lobbying in the US and the CEZ-DIA affair.
