Valeria Chomsky has apologized for the fact that her 97-year-old husband, Noam Chomsky, had given advice to the now-convicted Jeffrey Epstein on how to cope with pressure from the media.

The wife of the renowned linguist, philosopher and activist called it a "serious mistake," admitting that she and her husband had not sufficiently investigated Epstein's background before beginning to communicate with him. She added that Epstein had deceived them.

After the opening of Epstein's files by the US Department of Justice, one of the figures being examined for contacts with the now-deceased businessman, convicted of sex crimes, is Noam Chomsky.

The moment when their communication began is key. It was in 2019, when US authorities accused Epstein of human trafficking and he turned to Chomsky for advice on how to respond.

"I have observed the terrible way you are treated by the press and the public. It is painful to say, but I think the best way to move forward is to ignore them," Chomsky wrote in a message signed "Noam," which Epstein had emailed to an associate.

“What these predators desperately want is a public response, which then serves as justification for an onslaught of venomous attacks, many of which come simply from people seeking attention or from maniacs of all kinds,” he said.Chomsky further wrote.

"This is especially true now, with the hysteria that has developed around abuse of women, which has reached the point where even questioning an accusation is considered a crime more serious than murder," the elderly philosopher added, referring to the MeToo movement.

Noam Chomsky is one of the well-known figures who was revealed to have maintained friendly communication with Epstein even after his guilty plea in 2008. /Panorama
