Joan Laporta will serve as Barcelona president until 2031, after winning elections held on Sunday.

48,480 club members voted at polling stations across Catalonia, in a highly anticipated election process.

Laporta, 63, emerged victorious against Víctor Fonti, who had also come second in the 2021 elections.

In total, 42.34% of eligible voters participated, and the majority of them voted for Laporta to continue his second term.

Polling stations closed at 21:00 p.m., and an exit poll by public broadcaster TV3 showed Laporta winning about 66% of the vote.

After almost 75% of the votes counted, Laporta has won just over 68%, compared to 29% for his opponent.

The survey also included questions about Lionel Messi's future relationship with the club.

According to the results, 55% of respondents believe that the Argentine should return for a farewell match, 28% think that he should be named honorary president of the club, while 10% suggest that he return as a player.

Meanwhile, Marc-André ter Stegen was not allowed to vote because his name did not appear on the electoral roll.

However, some Barcelona players went to vote after the 5-2 win over Sevilla.

Barcelona women's team star Aitana Bonmatí, a three-time Ballon d'Or winner, also voted on "Spotify Camp Nou".

She stated that it was an honor to be part of a club where members democratically decide who will be president.

Before the official announcement of the result, Víctor Fonti admitted defeat and said that they did not get the result they hoped for, but they respect the decision of the members./Express newspaper/
