Israeli airstrikes killed 24 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip on Saturday, including 10 people who were begging for food in the war-torn enclave, hospital officials told The Associated Press.

Two American aid workers from the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), which is supported by Israel, were also injured in southern Gaza after unknown assailants threw grenades at them at a food distribution point, the organization said.

This bloodshed came at a time when efforts for a United States-brokered ceasefire, aimed at ending the nearly 21-month-old war, appear to be gaining momentum.

Hamas - the Palestinian group designated a terrorist organization by the US and the EU - responded "positively" on Friday evening to the latest US proposal for a 60-day ceasefire, but said more talks are needed to implement it.

Hamas is seeking guarantees that the initial ceasefire will lead to a complete end to the war and the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza.

US President Donald Trump is pushing for a deal and is expected to welcome Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to the White House next week to talk about a deal.

Israeli airstrikes hit tents in the Muwasi area on the southern edge of the Mediterranean coast in Gaza, killing seven people, including a Palestinian doctor and his three children, according to Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis.

Four others were killed in the town of Bani Suheila in southern Gaza, and three more people were killed in three separate attacks in Khan Yunis.

The Israeli military has not commented on these attacks.

Meanwhile, eight Palestinians were killed near an IDF aid distribution point in the southern city of Rafah, according to the hospital. Another Palestinian was killed near another IDF aid distribution point in Rafah.

The GHF denied that the killings had taken place near its distribution points. The organization has previously said that no one had been shot near its points, which are guarded by private contractors but can only be reached by passing Israeli military positions hundreds of meters away.

Another Palestinian was killed while waiting in line for aid trucks east of Khan Yunis, according to Nasser Hospital officials.

The material is currently unavailable.

The GHF said two American aid workers were wounded Saturday morning at an aid distribution point in Khan Yunis. The attackers threw grenades at the aid workers, the statement said.

The GHF later posted a photo of the remains of the explosive device and claimed, without providing evidence, that it had been detonated by Hamas militants.

The GHF distributes aid from four points surrounded by Israeli troops, three of which are located on the southern edge of Gaza.

It is an initiative supported by the US and Israel, which aims to bypass the UN.

Israel says Hamas has appropriated aid sent by the UN, a claim the UN denies.

Hamas has called on Palestinians not to cooperate with the GHF.

The war in Gaza began when Hamas-led militants attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, killing 1.200 people and kidnapping 251 others, according to Israeli officials.

The Gaza Health Ministry says the Israeli war since October 7 has killed over 57.000 Palestinians.

The war has also caused a famine, displaced the entire population of Gaza, and prompted charges of genocide at the International Court of Justice and war crimes at the International Criminal Court.

Israel denies these accusations./REL
