Israel plans to sue The New York Times and one of its journalists for defamation over an article that alleged that Israeli soldiers and prison guards had used widespread sexual violence against Palestinian prisoners.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Thursday that he had instructed his legal advisers to "consider the strongest legal action" against the newspaper and Nicholas Kristof, a veteran journalist who reported the story, Reuters reported.
"We will fight these lies in the court of public opinion and in court. The truth will triumph," Netanyahu wrote.
Netanyahu has not said where or when the lawsuit would be filed. He also threatened to sue the newspaper last August over an article about the famine in Gaza, but did not follow through.
